Upskilling Young Voices in Birmingham with Catch-22
This month, Sport Birmingham teamed up with Catch-22 to provide a valuable workshop for the Make A Difference (M.A.D) Youth Board. Catch-22 delivers personalised programmes that support individuals facing barriers to work. They hosted a workshop with the aim of supporting young people to build the skills they need to engage confidently in their communities.
Through a series of activities, the youth board members developed their abilities in facilitating conversations - learning how to share values, set positive boundaries and create safe spaces where everyone feels comfortable expressing their thoughts, even on challenging topics.
This training is part of our ongoing consultation work that is playing a key role in helping us understand the views of young people across Birmingham. By listening to their experiences of sport and physical activity in the city, we aim to work collaboratively to ensure every young person feels heard, included and valued in their community.
We look forward to welcoming Catch-22 back to Birmingham and continuing to upskill the workforce that will lead and support positive change across the city. |

SGO Update: Saint John Wall School Games Impact in Action
Jenny Ratcliffe is School Games Organiser for for Active@SJW, which is based at Saint John Wall Catholic School in Handsworth. Check out Jenny's festivals update!....
England Hockey - KS2 Festival
We kicked off our first School Games festival with an Engage and Inspire event led by England Hockey and our local club, Barford Tigers. Pupils from several schools attended King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ School, where they learned new hockey skills, met new people, and took part in exciting, conditioned games.
It was a mixed-ability, mixed-gender event, with everyone fully involved and demonstrating the true values of the School Games - teamwork, respect, passion, determination, honesty, and self-belief.
A special thank you goes to King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ School for hosting and providing fantastic young leaders to support the event. An extra big thank you to the Barford Tigers players for taking time out of their day jobs to inspire and motivate our young pupils to get active and try something new.
Thank you to the following schools for attending:
Cherry Orchard Primary, Nelson Junior School, Oasis Foundry, St. Teresa’s Catholic School
Basketball Festival - KS2
A group of pupils attended a KS2 Engage Basketball Festival hosted at King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ School. The festival was designed specifically for Pupil Premium students, giving them a valuable opportunity to take part in basketball, develop new skills, and build confidence in a supportive environment.
Pupils took part in an exciting skills carousel led by the fantastic student leaders from King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls, who were encouraging, enthusiastic, and excellent role models. To finish, pupils showcased what they had learned in a friendly, non-competitive game against other schools - demonstrating great teamwork and enjoyment throughout.
Throughout the festival, pupils displayed the true School Games values:
- Self-belief - having the confidence to try something new.
- Determination - giving their best effort in every activity.
- Teamwork - working together and supporting one another.
- Respect - listening carefully to leaders and showing good sportsmanship.
- Passion - playing with energy and enthusiasm from start to finish.
A huge thank you to King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ School for hosting and providing such inspiring leaders - the event was a brilliant celebration of inclusion, confidence, and the power of sport!
Thank you to the following schools for attending:
Cherry Orchard Primary School, Nelson Junior School, Oasis Foundry, St Clare's Catholic School

It’s quick, simple, and could change a young person’s life. 🔗 Click here to access the form from the England Football Website Since 2021, we’ve received 7486 unique referrals — each one a young player we might never have discovered without people like you spotting and championing them. This season, we’re focusing on players born in 2007 - 2012. Players can come from every corner of the game: small-sided, recreational, girls, mixed, affiliated, and un-affiliated football. Talent is everywhere — but opportunity only happens when someone steps up to make a referral. 📅 Don’t wait — the referral window closes 6th February 2026. Let’s make sure no talent goes unnoticed. Unleash Your Drive: Helping Birmingham’s Young People Thrive Through Golf The first time Leila gripped a club, she didn’t swing for distance - she aimed for calm. Her class had just learned a simple “focus breath” before a putting game. Two minutes later, a fidgety classroom had become a team, counting each other in, celebrating tiny wins, and learning to reset after misses. Golf skills, sure - but also the kind of everyday resilience schools work so hard to build. That’s the heart of Unleash Your Drive (UYD), the Golf Foundation’s schools programme that blends fun, inclusive golf games with nine Mental Toughness tools (think: focus, self-talk, emotional control, goal setting, and more). It’s designed for PE facilities, playgrounds, and school fields and it’s already changing how pupils in Birmingham approach challenge, confidence, and wellbeing. Two ways your school can get involved: UYD Subsidised - simple, affordable, ready to go (£370 for Primary, £550 for Secondary) Schools can jump straight in:Discounted Golfway equipment (child-friendly, safe, and built for school settings) Online teacher training and easy-to-use lesson plans Resources Mental wellbeing self-assessment and reporting so you can evidence impact over time. Schools get everything needed to run a high-impact programme that fits neatly into PE and enrichment time. UYD Fully Funded - application basedWe also support Fully Funded projects for schools serving communities with high levels of Free School Meals and areas of greater deprivation. If that’s you, your pupils could receive the full Unleash Your Drive programme at no cost - targeting the children who may benefit most from resilience, confidence, and belonging, especially those who feel furthest from the game. This is about more than golf. It’s about equipping young people with tools they can use in the classroom, the playground, and life. Why it works for schools - Fun first: quick-to-set-up games that hook every pupil, including reluctant movers
- Teacher-friendly: clear structure, minimal prep, maximum engagement
- Measurable impact: simple wellbeing self-assessments and reports you can share with SLT, governors, and parents
- Inclusive by design: adapted equipment and activities that level the playing field
A Birmingham focus“From primary schools already delivering Unleash Your Drive to the HAF programmes we’ve supported in recent years, we’re seeing Birmingham’s young people light up with confidence and connection. The city has all the ingredients for Unleash Your Drive to have the impact it was built for. We’re excited to help more schools bring it to life.” - Alice Lowe, Regional Development Officer, Golf FoundationReady to bring Unleash Your Drive to your school or to explore the Fully Funded route?Visit www.golf-foundation.org/uyd or get in touch with Alice Lowe, Regional Development Officer for further information Alice@golf-foundation.org |
