Opening Pathways to Careers in Sport and Physical Activity
Young people often perceive careers within the sports sector as focusing on becoming a performance athlete or a coach. This perception can create a barrier, discouraging young people from discovering the breadth of opportunities and roles that the sport and physical activity sector can provide. To address this, Sport Birmingham launched the Develop Your Way project - an initiative designed to empower young people through leadership development, with a focus on the range of wider roles within the sports industry. The project was delivered in collaboration with School Games.
The project engaged with both schools and colleges, and encouraged young people to take ownership of sport-based activities. Participants were provided with opportunities to enhance their transferable skills, and to explore future careers within the sport and physical activity landscape.

Young Leaders Step Up with the Go Lead Award
MAD Birmingham, in partnership with the Leadership Skills Foundation, recently delivered the Go Lead Award - an action-packed, one-day programme designed to help young people develop their communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.
Ten enthusiastic participants took part in a mix of lively classroom activities and a trip to the park, where they led short sports sessions and put their new skills into practice.
Ava shared, “It taught me a lot about how to deal with certain situations as a coach.” Dashaun added, “I expected it to be just sitting down doing boring work, but it was actually quite intriguing - I learnt a lot from it.”
By the end of the day, every young person had earned a certificate, gained valuable hands-on experience, and left with something to boost their CV.
