Supporting Confidence and Connection Through Dance
Students from SEND schools were given the opportunity to explore dance, supported and guided by professionals from the FABRIC team at Birmingham Hippodrome. FABRIC is a Midlands based dance development organisation with a vision to inspire people through dance, transforming lives, communities and places.
With the help of FABRIC and School Games, Sport Birmingham launched the dance project last year aiming to help teachers within Secondary SEND schools to develop their understanding, confidence and creativity around delivering dance. This started as a CPD session for teachers held at the Dance Exchange at Birmingham Hippodrome. In April this year, following on from the CPD session, Sport Birmingham partnered with FABRIC to deliver a targeted free 6-week dance programme within 4 local secondary schools. The initiative aimed to promote physical activity amongst their students, increase teacher confidence in delivering movement sessions and raise awareness of the role dance can play in specialised educational settings.

Sport Birmingham Awarded £20,000 from The Eveson Trust to Support Young People Across the City
We are delighted to announce that Sport Birmingham has been awarded £20,000 from The Eveson Trust to support the delivery of our Make a Difference ( MAD) Programme - an initiative that empowers young people aged 11-16 from disadvantaged communities through mentoring, skills development, and sport-based activities.
The MAD Programme is a transformative, person-centred intervention designed to engage young people who may be at risk of social exclusion or involved in challenging environments such as peer pressure and community-based risks. It combines structured mentoring sessions, life-skills workshops, parental engagement, and inspirational sport-related experiences to provide a safe, empowering space for young people to thrive.
The £20,000 grant will contribute towards core operational costs and programme delivery, including one-on-one and group mentoring embedded in sport and physical activity, workshops on employability, financial literacy, leadership, parental engagement sessions to strengthen family resilience, and experience days designed to raise aspirations through exposure to new sporting opportunities.
This generous funding will enable us to support over 100 young people across Birmingham, helping them build resilience, reduce risky behaviours, and develop essential life skills. By using sport as a tool for social impact, we aim to promote mental wellbeing, improve community cohesion, and inspire the next generation of leaders.
We are incredibly grateful to The Eveson Trust for recognising the importance of this work. Their support not only contributes to immediate programme delivery but also enhances the long-term sustainability of our efforts to create a healthier, more inclusive city.
If you are interested in supporting or partnering with us on the MAD Programme or similar initiatives, please contact Dan Smith, Senior Partnerships Manager - Business Development at dan.smith@sportbirmingham.org |
