Celebrating the Girls of Brum at Alexander Stadium
Earlier this month, the iconic Alexander Stadium played host to the inaugural 'Girls of Brum' event - a flagship celebration of sport and physical activity aimed at inspiring the next generation of young women across Birmingham.
Led by Sport Birmingham, the city-wide initiative brought together Year 6 and 7 girls from over 30 schools for a dynamic day of inclusive sport, empowerment workshops, and motivational talks delivered by local female role models. The event focused on building confidence, fostering positive relationships, and encouraging lifelong participation in physical activity.
Throughout the day, participants took part in a wide range of fun and inclusive activities facilitated by local sports and community organisations. Activities included tennis, flag football, pickleball, cycling, archery, tag wrestling and rugby, cricket, boxing and badminton.

Are You Missing Out on Funding?
We’re only half way through in 2025 but already our partner, easyfundraising, has passed on almost £600,000 to sports & physical activity groups this year, including our groups! Every 3 months they pay out to their registered causes all the funds that have been raised that quarter thanks to supporters collecting FREE cashback donations when they shop online. Did your group get a share from last month’s payout? If not, make sure your group is signed up ahead of their next Donation Day in August. We want to ensure that every group has easyfundraising on their side to get access to this free and unrestricted source of funding. More than 8,000 retailers are standing by to donate!

Badminton at the Lighthouse
Legacy West Midlands is one of Active Birmingham’s ‘anchor’ organisations. As the name suggests, these organisations are anchored in the community and embody the place-based approach of the programme. Active Birmingham is a partnership between Canal and River Trust, The Active Wellbeing Society, Birmingham City Council and Sport Birmingham. The fund forms part of the Birmingham 2022 Legacy, bringing communities and people together to improve wellbeing and act as a catalyst for change across the region. Badminton at the Lighthouse, is one of the fantastic projects that Legacy West Midlands is supporting in collaboration with Sport Birmingham and the wider Active Birmingham programme. The weekly sessions are aimed towards young people, particularly those in the nearby communities of Aston, Lozells and Newtown. They are held at The Lighthouse Young People’s Centre in Aston, which sits in the heart of the local community, and is a well-known facility for young people in the area.

Blueprint Paves the Way in Community Cricket
The Blueprint programme continues to go from strength to strength. Earlier in the year the programme focussed on providing opportunities for young people to access personal training qualifications alongside core transferable skills. These skills included leadership, communication, self-employment & personal finance. A further phase of the programme aimed at young people aged 17-29 was launched in the spring and focussed on supporting pathways into coaching community cricket. The "Pathway to Community Cricket Coach" initiative was launched at the iconic Edgbaston Stadium. This phase has been delivered in collaboration with United By 2022 and Warwickshire Cricket Foundation. Below are pictures from a session last month at the Doug Ellis Sports Centre which focussed on teaching participants how to coach bowling skills. The course has given participants the confidence to access local voluntary and paid coaching opportunities alongside access to further formal qualifications that make them a well-rounded community coach. The Blueprint programme has received generous support from HSBC and Gen22 (United By 2022). Read more about the initiative here. |
