Active Birmingham Learning Exchange: Building Momentum for a Healthier, More Active City
Partners from across Birmingham came together on the 14th April for the Active Birmingham Learning Exchange & Networking Event, a moment to reflect, connect and look ahead to the next chapter of place‑based working across the city.
The event brought together organisations committed to creating a Birmingham where physical activity is part of everyday life, inequalities are reduced, and systems work better for communities most affected by inactivity. Building on insight gathered by Active Birmingham Champions, Anchors and Connectors across 17 wards, the exchange provided space to share learning, explore what’s working locally and identify the conditions needed to go further together.

EmpowerHER Festival: Driving Change for Women and Girls in Sport
Despite continued progress, women and girls remain underrepresented in coaching, leadership and workforce roles across sport and physical activity. Barriers linked to access, confidence, inclusivity and wellbeing still impact participation and progression. In response, Sport Birmingham and The Active Wellbeing Society launched the inaugural EmpowerHER Festival - a bold, collaborative initiative designed to address these challenges and support lasting change.
Delivered from 11th to 26th April across multiple venues and online platforms, the EmpowerHER Festival brought together partners, practitioners and communities for a two-week programme of training, workshops and networking. It aimed to empower those working with women and girls, while creating more inclusive, supportive and accessible environments across the sector.
At its heart, the festival was about connecting people, and sharing ideas and opportunities to build a stronger, more representative future for sport and physical activity.

Ensuring Every Child Counts: Embedding SEND and Disabled Voices in Birmingham’s Local Sports Provision
On Monday 23 March, Access Sport delivered a SEND in Community Sport training session at Pitch 2 Progress in Bordesley Green for a range of sport and physical activity providers from across Birmingham.
With the Easter break fast approaching, many organisations were preparing to deliver their Bring it on Brum HAF holiday programmes. This training provided a valuable opportunity to pause and reflect on how inclusive these activities are for all children and young people.
While some providers offer specialist provision for disabled children and those with SEND, the wider ambition is to ensure that disabled children and young people can attend any Bring it on Brum activity, participating fully alongside their non-disabled peers.
Delivered in partnership with Sport Birmingham, the session brought together Active Birmingham Anchor and Champion organisations at Pitch2Progress, with catering provided by I💚Food. Attendees included teams from Sport Birmingham M.A.D, Pitch2Progress, Make Change, RoguePlay Theatre, BYSA and others.
The training explored the disability landscape through an interactive quiz, introduced key models of inclusion such as the Social and Medical models, and offered a deeper understanding of different impairment types; physical, learning, neurodivergent, auditory, visual, and hidden disabilities. The workshop concluded with scenario-based discussions using Access Sport’s ‘About Me’ persona cards, helping participants apply their learning in practical contexts.
If your organisation or club is interested in developing more inclusive provision for disabled and neurodivergent children and young people, please get in touch with Senior Development Manager Sophie.Humphries@AccessSport.org.uk |
