Earlier this month, in celebration of International Women’s Day, we launched EmpowerHER! This dedicated two-week festival has been created to support our workforce and inspire more positive opportunities for women and girls to get active.
Hosted by This Girl Can, The Active Wellbeing Society and Sport Birmingham, the festival brings together an exciting programme of opportunities across the fortnight, including:- Networking opportunities
- Expert-led webinars
- Coaching courses
- Inclusive activity sessions
Why get involved?
Whether you’re already a coach, volunteer or leader, or you’re aspiring to step into the sector, EmpowerHER is an opportunity for everyone to be part of the conversation. We welcome people of all backgrounds and genders, to join us in supporting more women and girls to be active.

Binni’s Blades
Take a look at the video below highlighting Binni’s Blades, an inspiring local fencing club dedicated to creating opportunities for women of all backgrounds to get active. The club is just one of many featured on the Active Birmingham Activity Finder.
In last month’s Sport Birmingham Newsletter, we introduced Jacky, who leads this fantastic platform, making it easy for anyone to discover local sports and physical activity sessions. Champions Lead the Next Chapter for Active Birmingham
The Active Birmingham network has recently recruited additional community organisations as part of its expansion plan to step forward in helping tackle one of the city’s biggest health challenges - physical inactivity.
These organisations are the new Active Birmingham ‘Champions’, and they are helping to shape the next phase of the Active Birmingham approach, by working directly with local residents to understand barriers to being active and identify solutions that work for their communities.

From the Stands to the Courts: Schools Experience the Shuttle Stars Festival
Badminton England’s Shuttle Stars Festival brought energy, excitement and plenty of smiles to Birmingham, as over 350 primary school pupils were given a fantastic opportunity to experience badminton in a unique setting alongside the prestigious Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships taking place at the Utilita Arena.

Birmingham’s Sporting Revolution: The Rise of Community PlayZones
The landscape of grassroots sport in Birmingham is undergoing a major transformation, with a host of PlayZones coming into use across the city. PlayZones are safe, inclusive and accessible outdoor facilities that bring communities together through recreational sport. The programme is funded through the Football Foundation.
Earlier this month, the official opening of Adderley Park PlayZone was attended by high-profile figures including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Cllr Mariam Khan, Cabinet Member for Health & Social Care, marking the beginning of a wider rollout of high-quality, accessible sporting hubs across the city. Amongst guests attending was our Community Engagement Officer Mel Gibbs. As the Active Birmingham Anchor for Alum Rock, Our Community Foundation have been working with Sport Birmingham, Aston Villa Football Club Foundation and Birmingham City Council to activate the Adderley Park facility.

TCS Mini London Marathon
Schools across the United Kingdom are invited to join the 2026 TCS Mini London Marathon. Open to pupils of all ages and abilities, the event encourages children to run, jog, walk, wheel or be guided around a two-mile course on school grounds. Since 2020, over one million children have taken part. Registration runs till 1st May, with every school receiving a free trophy.

Active TogetherThe British Blind Sport VI Active Together programme is helping to break down barriers to physical activity for people living with sight loss. Funded by the Peter Harrison Foundation, this two-year initiative is being delivered in Birmingham before expanding to Manchester.Designed to tackle the challenges many visually impaired people face when accessing sport, the programme provides tailored support to both participants and activity providers. This includes specialist training for coaches and volunteers, enabling them to confidently adapt sessions to be inclusive and accessible.VI Active Together also promotes opportunities directly to people with sight loss, helping them find and attend activities within their local community. £1,000s up for Grabs in the Easyfundraising Egg Hunt
From 23rd March - 5th April, a total of £7,000 in free funding is up for grabs in easyfundraising’s Easter competition - the Egg Hunt. Each day, a £100 or £200 donation could be won if your group is registered with easyfundraising, and the daily hidden Easter Egg is found on their website or app by one of your supporters. Plus, all daily winners will go into a draw to win one of five £1,000 donations, courtesy of sponsor Waitrose. Easyfundraising gives your group the opportunity to raise free donations when members and the wider community shop online with over 8,000 retailers. Once such grant available is the National Grid Community Matters Fund. The fund offers grants to grassroots organisations supporting disadvantaged communities, including supporting organisations that help young people not in education to access opportunities, build skills, and improve life outcomes.
