Coach Core 2026-27 Birmingham Apprenticeship Programme
Planning is underway for the launch of the Coach Core 2026-2027 Birmingham Apprenticeship Programme.
Coach Core is a national social mobility and employability charity that uses high-quality, paid apprenticeships to support young people aged 16-25 who face multiple barriers to education and employment. Since 2012, Coach Core has supported over 1,000 young people and worked with 300+ employers across the UK through a bespoke, place-based delivery model.
Specialising in inclusive sport and community engagement apprenticeships, Coach Core develops both young people and the organisations that employ them. As a Sport England System Partner, UK Sport Social Impact Partner, and the official apprenticeship and post-16 recruitment partner to CIMSPA, their work is rooted in strong local partnerships that respond directly to local need.
By working closely with Active Partnerships, local authorities, National Governing Bodies, housing providers and community organisations, Coach Core helps to build a diverse, skilled and values-led workforce. The focus is on long-term system change — supporting young people into paid employment, strengthening inclusive practice within organisations, and creating sustainable local talent pipelines, particularly in areas experiencing high deprivation, inactivity and low skills.
Programme launch timeline
- The next Birmingham programme will launch in September 2026
- Apprenticeship adverts live from May 2026
- Enrolments taking place throughout July and August 2026
Apprentices will join a local Birmingham cohort, benefiting from peer support and shared learning through a hybrid delivery model, including:
- Face-to-face group sessions every four weeks
- Online group learning every four weeks
- One-to-one tutor support
- Self-directed learning
- Professional development and CPD
Alongside the core apprenticeship education, apprentices will benefit from six additional CPD sessions, delivered bi-monthly. These sessions are designed to enhance practical skills and align with Active Together and Public Health priorities.
Coach Core is also expanding delivery across a wider range of apprenticeship standards within the sport and physical activity sector.
Employer consortium
Employers will have the opportunity to join the Coach Core Employer Consortium, meeting every eight weeks. These sessions provide valuable space to:
- Share best practice
- Exchange CPD and delivery opportunities
- Learn from and support other employers across the county

Levelling Up Youth Leadership in Birmingham! 🚀
We are excited to announce that we are one of three Active Partnerships selected to continue our collaboration with the Leadership Skills Foundation, following the success of last summer’s pilot. This next phase is all about place-based approaches to broaden access to opportunities within the sector.
M.A.D. Birmingham will be stepping up to mentor community Anchor organisations, empowering them to deliver the programme directly. Together, we’re exploring new ways to equip young people with lifelong skills and clear pathways into the professional and voluntary workforce. In this video learners who completed the Go Lead award as part of Sport Birmingam's Make a Difference (MAD) youth development programme tell us in their own words what difference the award has made to them. |

Building on the Success of Activity Finder
The Active Birmingham Activity Finder continues to be a game-changing tool for helping people across the city discover ways to get active. Accessible to anyone with a computer or smartphone, the platform allows users to quickly search for sport and physical activity sessions taking place in their local area - all with just a few taps or clicks.
Activity Finder also provides sport and physical activity clubs and organisations with a free and easy way to list and promote their sessions, helping them reach a wider audience through a trusted, user-friendly platform. Powered by open data, Activity Finder makes it simpler than ever to find, share and access opportunities to be active.
Since its launch in 2022, hundreds of clubs and organisations have listed their activities, connecting with thousands of people across Birmingham and helping residents of all ages and backgrounds find activities that suit them.
Spearheading the growth and ongoing development of Activity Finder is Jacky White, Community Engagement Officer at Sport Birmingham. Jacky works hard to ensure the platform features the latest sport and physical activity opportunities, while also supporting clubs and organisations who want to promote their sessions and make the most of the platform.
This year, Jacky is focusing on linking Activity Finder with Sport Birmingham’s ‘Girls of Brum’ campaign to encourage and support women and girls to access and thrive in leadership and coaching roles. As part of this work, Sport Birmingham is looking for clubs and organisations to take part in a short promotional video showcasing women and girls leading and coaching within sport and physical activity.
The video will be shared across Sport Birmingham’s social media channels, website and email communications, offering a fantastic opportunity to highlight your organisation and celebrate your commitment to supporting women and girls in leadership and coaching roles.
If you’re interested in getting involved, or would like support with listing your activities on Activity Finder, please contact jacky.white@sportbirmingham.org.

Beyond the Sport
Earlier this month, our Youth Operations Manager, Callam Dunne, had the honour of speaking at Connections for Prosperity: Beyond the Sport. The one-day conference at Edgbaston Stadium, Birmingham explored how sport can drive regional regeneration, investment, skills development, jobs, and community pride across the West Midlands.
We were proud to see Callam share his insights into the youth and community initiatives he leads across the city. He highlighted the challenges young people and local communities face, as well as the positive impact of the projects and programmes he is involved with, demonstrating the power of sport and physical activity to create meaningful change.
